Ben Tankard

Ben is a painter from the Blue Mountains. He has been a finalist in the Sulman Prize, Mosman Art Prize, Gallipoli Art Prize, ANL Maritime Art Prize and Calleen Art Prize. For the past three years Ben has been painting pop art appropriations of Penguin books and classic boardgames, in an expressive and sometimes subversive manner.

‘I worked in a bookshop for 15 years before becoming a full-time painter, and the shelves of Penguin books made a big impression.

Jasper John’s ‘flag’ paintings were the inspiration for my textured, layered ‘Unpopular Penguins’. Other artists I’m inspired by include Rosalie Gascoigne for her spliced text, and Nicholas Harding for his rich, thick paintwork.’
