Artist Statement
Jill Barber Richardson was raised on a sheep and cattle station in Central Western Queensland and the bush has strongly influenced her work. Jill is a natural artist working over the years to perfect the layering of paints with a technique, that is uniquely her own. Jills paintings have a dimension to them that makes them feel like they could come alive at any moment. Truly spectacular. She went on to produce caricatures and cartoons of people and popular events – imbuing her work with her characteristic sense of humour.
Over the last three decades, Barber Richardson’s work has transitioned into large scale animal portraiture – capturing the soulful, irreverent and anthropomorphic elements of the wild and tame animals on the farm where she lives. Quirky and distinctive, Jill Barber Richardson’s style is modern yet steeped in traditional portrait style, faithful to the animals she paints and respectful of each creature.
